A 3rd-tier soccer match in Germany took a really surprising activate Sunday, as a referee had beer thrown in his face by an enraged fan throughout halftime. According to the Associated Press, Zwickau — a group going through relegation — was taking over Rot-Weiss Essen when referee Nicolas Winter had a cup of beer tossed in his face by an irritated fan.
After the incident, the match was deserted. As of Monday morning it’s unclear when or if the match will likely be resumed.
The fan was reportedly pissed off with Winter’s determination to ship off a Zwickau participant and provides a penalty kick to Rot-Weiss Essen previous to halftime. As Winter was strolling off of the pitch, the fan splashed a cup of beer proper in his face.
Winter had given Zwickau defender Nils Butzen a purple card for taking down ahead Isaiah Young. The referee adopted that call up with awarding a penalty for a hand ball from the ensuing free kick.
